En la vereda El 60, del corregimiento de La Gabarra (Tibú), los paramilitares construyeron una casa de tortura en la que mantuvieron cautivos y torturaron a decenas de personas, muchas de las cuales fueron desaparecidas y cuyos cuerpos aún no han sido recuperados.
Esta casa, en medio de la vereda, se convirtió en el lugar más temido por los habitantes de este lugar, al que se accede saliendo de La Gabarra, cruzando el puente sobre el imponente río Catatumbo y pasando por la base militar, recientemente hostigada por las disidencias del Frente 33 de las Farc.
“Los gritos eran desgarradores. Se escuchaban por toda la vereda. Era realmente doloroso para nosotros saber que esas personas estaban ahí y no poder hacer nada por ellas. Cuando los gritos por fin cesaban, sabíamos que ya se las habían llevado. Nunca supimos qué pasó con esas personas, pero suponemos que las desaparecieron. Nadie ha contado lo que allí ocurrió con certeza, pues no quedaron sobrevivientes”.
De esta manera narraron algunos habitantes de esta vereda lo que ocurría en esta casa, entre 1999 y 2004, cuando la visité por primera vez en octubre de 2016 y escribí para el Diario La Opinión las impresiones y los sentimientos que se me generaron al haber estado en este lugar.
Esta casa, aparentemente una más de la vereda, albergaba en su patio dos celdas que los paramilitares construyeron con el único fin de mantener cautivas y torturar a todas aquellas personas que consideraban guerrilleras, colaboradoras de la guerrilla o enemigas de su causa y su negocio del narcotráfico.
“Los carros de ellos (los paramilitares) llegaban a la vereda y de inmediato pasaban a la parte posterior de la casa, donde estaba la ‘cárcel’ que habían construido. Las personas que traían nosotros no las veíamos porque ellos las entraban por detrás, no por el frente de la vivienda. Ahí siempre tenían a alguien porque los gritos nos advertían de lo que estaba pasando”, narró para La Opinión otro habitante de esta vereda hace 4 años.
Al entrar a las celdas, el ambiente se tornaba pesado, la respiración se hacía difícil y el calor, sofocante en esta zona del Catatumbo y redoblado porque las celdas no tenían techo, llevaban a imaginar que el solo hecho de estar allí, al mediodía, de un día cualquiera, ya constituía una tortura.
Hace 4 años, el entonces director territorial de la Unidad para las Víctimas en Norte de Santander y Arauca, Saniel Peñaranda, manifestó que esta casa, que fue un escenario de terror, iba a ser transformada dentro de la medida de rehabilitación comunitaria que se adelanta en este corregimiento, específicamente dentro del componente ‘transformación de escenarios locales y duelos colectivos’.
“Nosotros tenemos un proceso de reparación colectiva en La Gabarra. Por eso, reunidos con la comunidad, les dijimos que lo que buscamos es darle sentido a la transformación de la casa, pues no es solamente derrumbar y construir una estructura nueva, sino realmente hacer un trabajo de memoria, que haya transformación social para que la casa tenga un significado para la comunidad”, señaló Peñaranda al Diario La Opinión en octubre de 2016.
Y agregó que a la parte de adelante de la casa se le haría una transformación total para que sea agradable a la vista, que resalte en la comunidad. “Pero la parte de las celdas tiene que conservar su esencia porque eso es lo que nos trae memoria, nos recuerda lo que allí ocurrió. Eso no podemos mandarlo al olvido porque fue una etapa que les generó a ellos resistencia y valentía para, a pesar de todo, sobreponerse a la tragedia”. Sin embargo, de este deseo inicial, no quedó nada.
Hace una semana volví a La Gabarra y tuve la oportunidad de llegar hasta El 60. Allí, de la casa que había conocido hace 4 años, no queda ningún rastro. El frente y su interior, que fue ampliado, lucen como los de una vivienda de ciudad, diferenciándose notablemente de cualquier otra casa de la vereda. Sin embargo, lo que me sorprendió, para mal, estaba en el patio.
Antes de llegar, le había dicho a Juan Pablo Bayona, el fotógrafo que me acompañaba y con el que había ido por primera vez a este lugar hace 4 años, que necesitaba unas fotos muy explícitas de los mensajes que había al interior de las celdas y que recordaba, recogían la angustia de quienes habían sufrido allí toda suerte de vejámenes.
Un mensaje en particular, que recordaba con absoluta claridad, decía ‘sé siempre el ejemplo de tu familia y tus hijos en todos los actos de tu vida’. Otros, que también recordaba, pero no de manera tan clara, eran nombres, fechas y algunos otros pensamientos llenos de angustia que alguna víctima plasmó allí en los minutos previos a su muerte. También recordaba un ‘Dios es amor’ en la puerta de una de las celdas.
De todo esto, hoy, no queda nada. Las dos celdas fueron convertidas en dos habitaciones, las paredes que antes albergaban los mensajes de las víctimas fueron empañetadas y las rejas que servían de puertas y techo, fueron pintadas de negro. Además, las dos celdas fueron encerradas en una especie de construcción que dista mucho del aspecto rústico y descuidado que caracterizaban a este espacio.
El techo, que ahora es de eternit, oscureció por completo el lugar y entrar en él, ya no genera absolutamente nada en quien llega hasta allí por primera vez. A mí, en cambio, me dio mucha tristeza, y rabia, ver en lo que convirtieron este espacio.
Según las personas que me mostraron el lugar la semana pasada, fue la misma comunidad la que pidió que las celdas fueran convertidas en las simples habitaciones que se ven hoy.
“Todos aquí en El 60 pidieron que eso se borrara, no querían ver nada que les recordara la época paramilitar (1999-2004). Por eso mandaron a pintar todo y a empañetar las paredes. Creo que eso no era lo más conveniente, pero como el peso de la decisión quedó en manos de la comunidad, pues fue lo que terminó pasando”, dijo una de las personas que asistió la semana pasada a una reunión en la que se ultimaban los detalles para una exposición fotográfica que se va a realizar en este lugar.
No sé si la decisión de la comunidad haya estado motivada por alguna razón en particular o de verdad obedeció a su interés de querer borrar del todo, de una sola empañetada, lo que allí ocurrió. Sin embargo, creo que debieron primar otros intereses antes de que se procediera a eliminar, con cemento y pintura, una realidad que trasciende a la nueva apariencia que luce este lugar y que permanecerá anclada por siempre en la memoria de los que alguna vez estuvimos allí y evidenciamos el peso de un horror que hoy, inexplicablemente, fue eliminado.
