“CÚCUTA NO FUE FUNDADA”

Durante mucho tiempo, la fecha de fundación de Cúcuta ha sido objeto de debate y controversia. Sin embargo, las investigaciones del historiador Silvano Pabón Villamizar revelan una nueva perspectiva que desafía la creencia arraigada de que Cúcuta fue fundada el 17 de junio de 1733. Según Pabón, la realidad histórica señala que la institucionalización oficial de la ciudad ocurrió el 20 de noviembre de 1734.

En su análisis minucioso, Pabón destaca que la escritura de donación de tierras de doña Juana Rangel de Cuéllar, fechada el 17 de junio de 1733, no representa en sí misma la fundación de San José de Cúcuta. Este documento era solo uno de los requisitos que debían cumplirse dentro del proceso de erección parroquial, una etapa preliminar en la búsqueda de la autonomía eclesiástica para la comunidad.

La erección parroquial se refiere al proceso mediante el cual se establece oficialmente una parroquia dentro de una determinada jurisdicción eclesiástica. En el contexto histórico de la época hispánica, la erección parroquial implicaba la creación de una entidad eclesiástica con su propia organización y jurisdicción territorial.

Para que se llevara a cabo la erección parroquial, generalmente se requerían ciertos requisitos y trámites legales. Entre algunos están: 1. Donación de tierras: Se debía contar con una donación de tierras por parte de un benefactor o benefactores, quienes proporcionaban los terrenos necesarios para la construcción de la iglesia y el establecimiento de la parroquia. 2. Suficiencia de población: Era necesario contar con una población suficiente que justificara la creación de una parroquia independiente. 3. Apoyo económico: Los solicitantes de la erección parroquial debían demostrar que contaban con los recursos económicos necesarios para mantener el funcionamiento de la parroquia, incluyendo la remuneración del clero, el mantenimiento de la iglesia y la realización de las actividades pastorales. 4. Infraestructura adecuada: Se debía contar con la construcción de una iglesia u otro edificio de culto, así como con los espacios necesarios para las actividades religiosas y administrativas de la parroquia. 5. Aprobación de las autoridades eclesiásticas y civiles: La solicitud de erección parroquial debía ser sometida a las autoridades competentes, tanto eclesiásticas como civiles, para su aprobación.

El proyecto de erigir una parroquia formal en Cúcuta fue liderado por un grupo colectivo de vecinos blancos y mestizos, entre ellos destacados hacendados que aportaron recursos significativos. Estos ciudadanos comprometieron sus bienes y propiedades en escrituras hipotecarias, demostrando su dedicación y apoyo a la causa. No obstante, el acto de fundación en sí mismo correspondía a la autoridad competente, es decir, al vicepatrono real representante de la Corona y al Estado, no a un particular.

El enfoque histórico y jurídico de la época hispánica respalda esta nueva perspectiva. Las parroquias no eran fundadas, sino erigidas, y esta responsabilidad recaía en las autoridades eclesiásticas y civiles. Por lo tanto, la erección parroquial de San Joseph del Guasimal fue oficializada el 20 de noviembre de 1734, mediante el título expedido por el presidente de la Real Audiencia de Santafé, don Rafael de Eslava.

Este replanteamiento de la historia de Cúcuta invita a una revisión crítica de los documentos y a una comprensión más profunda de los procesos institucionales y las categorías jurídicas de la época. Es fundamental alejarnos de narrativas simplificadas y abordar el pasado desde una perspectiva más completa y precisa. la institucionalización oficial de la ciudad ocurrió el 20 de noviembre de 1734, desafiando así la creencia arraigada de que Cúcuta fue fundada el 17 de junio de 1733. Cúcuta no cumplió 290 años de fundada, por el contrario se conmemoran 289 años de su erección parroquial.

Si bien la fecha específica de fundación puede ser motivo de debate, lo que resulta claro es que Cúcuta tiene una historia rica y compleja que se ha desarrollado a lo largo del tiempo. La ciudad ha experimentado un crecimiento significativo y ha desempeñado un papel destacado en la región. Independientemente de los detalles exactos de su fundación, la identidad y el legado de Cúcuta trascienden cualquier fecha específica.

Reevaluar nuestra comprensión de la fundación de Cúcuta nos permite apreciar mejor la evolución histórica de la ciudad y valorar la contribución colectiva de sus habitantes en su desarrollo.
