I have learned a number of important things via your post. I will also like to mention that there will be a situation where you will have a loan and never need a co-signer such as a Fed Student Support Loan. However, if you are getting that loan through a classic creditor then you need to be prepared to have a cosigner ready to help you. The lenders will probably base that decision on a few factors but the most significant will be your credit ratings. There are some creditors that will additionally look at your job history and determine based on this but in most cases it will hinge on your rating.
