Es fundamental comprender que el compromiso real con la causa animal no se trata solo de evitar el consumo de carne, sino que va mucho más allá. Debe involucrar un cambio en la forma en que nos relacionamos con los animales y en cómo se trata a los mismos en nuestra sociedad.
Otro problema que se presenta es la falta de propuestas reales que solucionen de fondo los problemas de la protección animal. Muchos grupos, personas, cuidadores y organizaciones animalistas se enfocan en rescatar animales abandonados, enfermos y maltratados, lo cual es importante, pero no es suficiente. En el nefasto decreto 200 de 2021, firmado por el alcalde Jairo Yáñez se dispone la ruta para la atención de animales de compañía en extrema vulnerabilidad en el municipio, la cual realmente no es una ruta, si no una orden de dejar a merced los animales atropellados y en malas condiciones de salud en las casas de los cuidadores, única y exclusivamente con una desparasitación como tratamiento médico.
Además, es fundamental mencionar que la sociedad en general juega un papel fundamental en la protección animal. Por ejemplo, el abandono de animales es un problema muy grave que fomenta la explotación y maltrato animal. Si bien es importante rescatar y dar hogar a estos animales, también es importante que la sociedad adopte una cultura de tenencia responsable de mascotas, que incluya esterilización y vacunación, y que promueva el respeto y el amor por los animales. Sin una tenencia responsable, seguirá el crecimiento exponencial de animales en condición de calle y seguirán funcionando los centros cómo zoonosis que seguirán sacrificando animales para reducir su número.
