El viernes 6 de junio de 2003, sesenta y cuatro días después de haber sido secuestrado por paramilitares del Frente Fronteras, cuando salía de la Universidad Francisco de Paula Santander (UFPS), en Cúcuta, fue hallado el cadáver del estudiante Gerson Gallardo Niño, en un paraje solitario de la vía que de Tibú conduce a La Gabarra, en pleno Catatumbo. A su lado, yacía el cuerpo sin vida de otro estudiante de la UFPS, Edwin Ariel López Granados, a quien los paramilitares se habían llevado de su casa, ubicada en el barrio Cúcuta 75, de la ciudadela Juan Atalaya, el 13 de abril, a las 3 de la mañana.
En apenas 10 días, los hombres comandados por Jorge Iván Laverde Zapata, alias El Iguano, le asestaron los dos golpes más duros que ha recibido la comunidad estudiantil de la UFPS en toda su historia. Diez días en los que las autoridades hicieron muy poco por hallar a Gerson o evitar que Edwin corriera su misma suerte. Diez días en los que Héctor Parra, que por aquel entonces ya era rector, no fue capaz de levantar su voz con la suficiente vehemencia para evitar que a sus estudiantes los mataran y los paramilitares se tomaran la universidad que dirigía.
Tras el secuestro de Gerson y Edwin, y antes de que sus cuerpos fueran hallados sin vida en el kilómetro 18 de la vía Tibú-La Gabarra, cinco estudiantes y al menos dos profesores, decidieron abandonar sus estudios y sus trabajos, y huir de la ciudad.
Gerson, estudiante de Licenciatura en Biología y Química, y Edwin, estudiante de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Pamplona, y Coordinador del Comité Universitario de la UFPS, de la que era técnico en electromecánica, fueron asesinados porque a El Iguano se le dio la gana de hacerlo. Porque quiso y las armas se lo permitieron. Y también, porque nadie se lo impidió. Porque nadie abogó por Gerson y Edwin. Porque a nadie le importó que el principal centro de estudios de la ciudad fuera infiltrado por los ‘paras’, ante la mirada pasiva de sus directivas que no se unieron a las autoridades para evitar lo que allí estaba pasando.
Por las muertes de Gerson y Edwin nadie respondió. Sí, El Iguano confesó haber sido el responsable de los dos homicidios. Confesó que los mandó a matar, como confesó que mandó a matar a cientos de personas más en Norte de Santander. Las vidas de Gerson y Edwin, y el profundo dolor que dejaron sus muertes entre sus familiares y amigos, terminaron engrosando una lista interminable de crímenes confesados por El Iguano ante un Tribunal, el de Justicia y Paz, que nunca se preocupó (o no pudo hacerlo ante la infinidad de casos por resolver), por indagar más allá de lo que El Iguano quiso decir sobre los hechos.
Porque, además de que El Iguano los mató, descargó sobre Gerson y Edwin la responsabilidad de sus propias muertes al decir, sin ningún pudor, que los había mandado a matar por ‘guerrilleros’, porque sus nombres habían aparecido en un supuesto computador incautado a la guerrilla en el Catatumbo. Un computador que nunca nadie vio, que los ‘paras’ nunca entregaron, que ninguna autoridad pudo analizar y que se convirtió en el validador de decenas de crímenes cometidos por los paramilitares en Cúcuta y su área metropolitana.
Lo que El Iguano nunca contó, y quizás nunca contará porque le da miedo perder los beneficios que la justicia le concedió, es quiénes, desde adentro de la UFPS, siguieron a los dos estudiantes. Quiénes, en la UFPS, fueron sus infiltrados. Quiénes, en la UFPS, fueron sus aliados, sus cómplices, sus informantes. Quiénes, desde la UFPS, corroboraron, sin ninguna investigación de por medio, que Gerson y Edwin eran lo que los ‘paras’ creían y por eso debían morir.
